Scorpions defeat Tulsa Athletics 4-0
A hat-trick from Colombian forward Esteban Bayona led the NASL’s San Antonio Scorpions to a 4-0 victory over the visiting Tulsa Athletics of NPSL (National Premier Soccer League) in a 2014 preseason encounter at Toyota Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Scorpions took a 1-0 lead at halftime after a goal from midfielder Sam Garza off a perfect cross by Mexican midfielder Javier Saavedra in the 24th minute.
In the second half, Bayona scored his first of three tallies of the day in the 56th minute when he headed a ball into open net off a rebounded shot by Gambian forward Sainey Touray that was saved by the Tulsa goalkeeper.
Fifteen minutes later, Bayona got his second goal off a cross from teammate Julio Garcia to increase the Scorpions lead to 3-0.
In the 78th minute, Bayona closed out the scoring has he played a pass from his head to his foot and then around the Tulsa goalkeeper into the back of the net for the 4-0 final.
The victory maintains the San Antonio unbeaten this preseason and Scorpions coach Alen Marcina said that these types of matches are good for squad’s fitness and building their depth.
San Antonio is scheduled to kick off the 2014 NASL Spring Season when they greet Minnesota United FC on April 12.
